May 2014

Just like the seasons – everything moves and changes and we must learn to adapt. The one constant is our belief that people can achieve sobriety, change their lives and build positive futures. The programme is intensive based on psychological interventions (therapy) combined with educational, vocational and social activities. How did we spend our last Bank holiday – on the beach playing our version of ‘Its a knock-out’. Educational and Vocational courses are proving to be popular with clients continually raising the standard of achievement.

Welcome to Westcliffe House

Education

Its been a busy few months at Westcliffe with clients pursuing their academic as well as therapeutic programmes. Several clients are pursuing their Horticulture qualifications, levels 1-2; ten are chasing their City & Guilds in computing and Level 1-2 in maths and English. One client has gained their qualification in Mental Health Level 2, English and Maths.  Four have got their places to attend the Access to Higher Education and four on Degree Courses ranging from Architecture to Social work. Our congratulations to all of them. The National Career Service now attends monthly assisting clients in their pursuit for a new life.

Charities

We’ve been doing well with our charity work – the Ginger Houses made and donated by clients have been followed up with knitting 8″ squares to be sewn together for children dying of Aids in Africa. It been wonderful to see both males and females in the house focussing on their knitting lately!

We have also ‘adopted a dog’  through the Dogs Trust which offers homes to badly treated animals which cannot be re-housed. He’s called ‘Seamus’ and we’re quite excited to hear how he progresses over the next months. Bit like us- trying to improve our quality of life.

Gardening

We’ve been working in conjunction  with a local college to maintain Prince consort Gardens, a park very close to Westcliffe. We are planting out new areas, weeding, pruning and cleaning existing ones. Everyone reaps the benefit – the community and clients alike. We have also been working on our own garden; recently decking out a new area and are now busy planting and sitting admiring the fruits of our efforts.
